Steps to Protect Your Home While Away

You have been looking forward to your vacation. Don’t spend it worrying about the security of your home. If you take a few precautions before you depart, you can leave your home and not think about it again until you walk back in the front door. The goal is to make it look to passersby like you never even left. It should seem as if somebody is still at home while you are away.

Here are some steps you can take to help protect your home while you are enjoying your getaway.

  • Tell only family and trusted friends that you will be away and your home will be empty.
  • Ask a family member, friend, or neighbor to collect your mail for you.
  • Use automatic timers on a few interior lights and perhaps a radio and/or televisions, but set them so they’ll turn on and shut off at different times in the morning and evening. Don’t forget about your home’s exterior lights.
  • Secure all openings into your home like pet doors and mail slots.
  • Refrain from sharing any details of your trip on social media until after you return.
  • Keep a car parked in the driveway.
  • Make arrangements to have your lawn mowed or your driveway shoveled while you are away
  • Do not leave your house key hidden outside your home, even if you think you have come up with the best hiding spot ever.
  • If you don’t have a security system, pick up a couple fake security company signs to post in the windows of your front and back doors. While you are at it, you might want to put up a couple phony security cameras too.
  • Unplug all unnecessary appliances like televisions, computers, coffee makers, toasters, microwaves, etc.
  • Clean out your refrigerator of all perishable foods and make sure your trash has been emptied.
  • Have a neighbor take care of your trash and recycling on collection day.
  • Let the local police department know you will be away and for how long.
